As Hurricane Nate approached the northern gulf it brought with it a 4-7′ storm surge. These surges can really help to rehabilitate the health of the marsh because they tend to really wash away some of the silt and that has a tendency to cloud the water during high wind day’s. It also will wash all the algae that blooms during warmer water temps out sea. The algae can give the water a yellowish color and can make visibility a couple feet bellow the surface tough. The eastern marsh experienced somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 – 65mph winds for a duration of 7-10 hours. That would normally cause a serious water clarity problem for a week or so. We fly fished the Louisiana marsh yesterday which would have been 48 hours after the storm and the waters were extremely clean everywhere we ran. The marsh waters are gulf green with 85 degree water temps. That does not happen everyday. The Louisiana Marsh is by far the premier destination to come and sight fish large Redfish on any given date but after a storm like this we alway’s experience above average conditions and fishing for a few seasons. The next few seasons will be ones for the books! If you have been thinking of giving this fishery a look the next 24 months will be a great option. I’m really looking forward to guiding Anglers of all skill levels to a trophy Louisiana Redfish.
